Description

IC 4628, prominently known as the Prawn Nebula, dominates the night sky in the southern constellation of Scorpius. This expansive emission nebula, awash with glowing ionized gas, serves as a vibrant stellar nursery. It is celebrated for its rich red hues, created by the intense radiation from young, hot stars ionizing the hydrogen gas from which they were born.
Snapshot Descriptions:

  • Center of IC 4628: This detailed snapshot of the center of IC 4628 vividly showcases the nebula’s most intense regions of star formation. The vibrant emissions and dynamic structures within this area highlight the active processes that give the Prawn Nebula its glowing appearance.

  • NGC 6242: Positioned at the bottom left of the image, NGC 6242 is a visually striking open cluster. Its bright, blue-white stars form a sharp contrast against the deep red of the surrounding nebula, showcasing the diverse stages of stellar evolution present within this galactic scene.

  • B48: Situated near the central right, just below the midpoint of the image, B48 appears as a dark, dense blob. This Bok globule is a stark contrast to the surrounding nebula’s luminosity, indicating regions where new stars may eventually emerge from these compact clouds of dust and gas.

  • Globules at the Top: The top center of the image reveals several dark, dense globules, similar in nature to Thackeray's Globules. These features are indicative of concentrated regions of gas and dust, potentially marking the early stages of star formation within the nebula.
